Inter-Agency Efforts for SEDD Implementation

The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Analytical Services Branch (ASB) is working with offices from the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to specify requirements for delivery of Staged Electronic Data Deliverable (SEDD) Extensible Markup Language (XML) files. Joint efforts are also underway to enhance tools for reviewing these SEDD XML files utilizing existing data review software.

Please visit the USEPA SEDD Web site for more information about SEDD including: SEDD implementation status, and inter-agency efforts.

The following SEDD documents are available for download from the SEDD Documents and Downloads Web site:

  • SEDD Specification document;
  • Data Element Dictionary (DED);
  • Element name changes between SEDD Specification versions;
  • SEDD-specific Document Type Definitions (DTDs);
  • Instructions and example files for SEDD Stages 1, 2a, 2b, and 3.

SEDD XML File Generation Options

After gaining a thorough understanding of the deliverable requirements, laboratories can either:

  1. Generate SEDD XML files using in-house or vendor-developed systems, then validate the deliverables against the reference Document Type Definition (DTD) required by the data recipient (example: USEPA).
  2. Generate SEDD XML files using the SEDD Generator Tool. Currently three versions of SEDD Tool are available for Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) laboratory use free of charge.  Please consult the SEDD Generator Tool Requirements for information regarding necessary PC configuration requirements.
