What security feature does the SEDD Generator Tool use over the Internet? Does the SEDD Generator Tool produce reports? Where can I obtain additional help with data mapping? How much does the Staged Electronic Data Deliverable (SEDD) Generator Tool cost? The SEDD Generator Tool is free to any data provider as long as they apply through the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Analytical Services Branch (ASB) Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) or contact the ASB and obtain permission to use the SEDD Generator Tool. How will the SEDD Generator Tool affect my database? The SEDD Generator Tool does not modify, insert, or delete any data records in your database. It only retrieves data using Structured Query Language (SQL) select statements through an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) connection to generate SEDD Extensible Markup Language (XML) files. These XML files can be transferred by the SEDD Generator Tool using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to a data requestor's or provider's FTP server over the Internet. These files can be sent in a compressed (zipped) or uncompressed format. What kind of Data Base Administrator (DBA) does the SEDD Generator Tool require? The day-to-day operation of the SEDD Generator Tool at the data provider's site does not require extensive DBA work once the database is configured to support the processes. The database mapping step requires someone with advanced database skills and a complete knowledge of the analytical data flow at the data provider's site. How often do I need to map my data? How long does it take? You need to map data only once for each Document Type Definition (DTD). Your mapping information can be saved and re-used by other data deliverables through the SEDD Generator Tool’s “Import Map” feature. Please reference the SEDD User's Guide for more information. What Internet security feature does the SEDD Generator Tool use? The currently available SEDD Web-Based Tool utilizes User Authentication procedures that only allow registered users to log into the SEDD Generator Tool using a UserName and Password. The data is mapped on the user’s local workstation and the XML file is created locally on the user's hard drive. The SEDD Stand-Alone Tool has different security requirements due to different system architecture design. The SEDD Web-Based Tool requires a continuous Internet connection for validation of XML files and for referencing DTDs on the SEDD Web server. The SEDD Stand-Alone Tool, on the other hand, is inherently more secure by design because it does not require an Internet connection for any of its functionalities. Please reference the SEDD Stand-Alone Tool User's Guide (PDF, 3.8MB, 82 pages) for more in formation. How does the SEDD Generator Tool decide which XML "tag names" to use? How will my data requestor recognize the content of the XML file? The SEDD Generator Tool uses the data element names specified within the DTD as the XML tag names. Therefore, your data requestor will recognize and understand your data. Does the SEDD Generator Tool produce reports? The SEDD Generator Tool produces an XML file that can be opened on-screen using industry-standard XML viewers. At this time, hardcopy reports are not supported by the SEDD Generator Tool. You may extract reports using third-party systems. Where can I obtain additional help with data mapping? For assistance with data mapping, please refer to the SEDD User's Guide, or contact the SEDD Help Desk for assistance. |
